Kent Youth League Invitational Cup

Welling United Under 15s 2-3 Ashford United Under 15s (After extra time)

Having been cancelled last week end due to the weather Ashford got the first of their Cup campaigns under way this Sunday as they faced Welling United away. With London teams traditionally being very tough, Welling were true to form and gave Ashford a battle from the off with the first period of play being end to end seeing Ashford with a slight advantage in possession and chances. The stalemate was broken in the 18th minute when Rowan Shardlow set the pass that Rueben London-Hobbs took advantage of and beat the Welling keeper to give Ashford the lead. Welling managed to break against the flow of play in the 30th minute to bring the game back level and the teams went into the break at 1-1. The full paced and physical battle continued in the second half until Welling took the lead 15 minutes in which put Ashford on the back foot but the lads dug in and continued to test the oppositions defence numerous times until an error by Welling’s centre back saw Ashford awarded a penalty kick for a hand ball. Ashford Captain Alfie Prior stepped up and powered the ball into the bottom left hand corner which squared the score at 2-2 and there it stayed until the full time whistle. After a quick break and team talk two sessions of extra time followed with neither team able to break the dead lock in the first session. Both teams dug deep and pace of the game did not slow down but with 3 minutes left on the clock a lucky back header from Rowan Shardlow was chested down and then set by Ronald Sithole for midfielder George McIlroy to slot home to give Ashford a well battled win and put them through to the next round.
