Ashford paid the price for failing to capitalise on a game which they dominated, by gifting visitors Corinthian a share of the points in the final minute, having bossed the game throughout.

Striker Mark Axell could hardly believe his luck, when his miscued effort which barely had enough power to reach the back of the net somehow squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Dan Eason, in a moment he will wish to forget.

United had been good value for the lead held since the 32nd minute, courtesy of a good turn and swivel by Shaun Welford, who having beaten the offside trap, placed the ball with his left foot into the right-hand corner of the net.

Five minutes before the lead, Pat Kingwell rose well from a corner-kick, but saw his fine header harshly disallowed by the officials.

Ryan Palmer again impressed and a good burst of speed sent him through on goal, but he fired a shot just wide as the first-half drew to a close. Another to shine in green was Gibraltar International player Jamie Bosio who was given a place in the starting line-up for the first time under Danny Lye.

United in search of a second, saw Lye head over the bar following a long throw deep into the box by Chris Elliott, then had a good shout for a penalty when Paul Booth was bundled over, but Referee Jack Fagg waved away their appeals.

Ashford created plenty of opportunities, but Luke Cuthbert having waltzed into the box with a great run, decided to pass rather than shoot, with the target in sight and so another chance went.

Brother Adam then drifted in from the right to ping the ball into the danger area which almost produced a Corinthian own goal, whilst Michael Phillips having been nicely teed up by the dangerous Palmer contrived to miss the target, with keeper Daniel Bygrave static.

The visitors had few chances, with Ashford dominating possession, but did see Michael Hagan curl one wide then Oscar Housego shot over the crossbar.

It looked to all watching that Ashford would collect their first home win on the 3G pitch, but they were made to rue not finding a second goal, when in heartbreak fashion the last gasp Corinthian soft equaliser somehow found the net.

Even then after conceding, United perhaps should have struck back but Adam Cuthbert screwed one wide of the target in stoppage time.
