Struggling Ashford United picked up just their second point in seven matches after a battling 1-1 draw with Whyteleafe at the Homelands.

The hosts enjoyed a good first-half and created numerous chances taking the lead through Tyrell Richardson-Brown, but just before the break Sam Clayton equalised from the penalty spot.

The second-half though was one-way traffic with Ashford doing well to hold firm as the Leafe came on strong, but a mixture of resolute defending and wayward shooting from the visitors meant in the end it was a point apiece.

Ashford started the game brightly and even before the early opener had seen Richardson-Brown twice go close, firstly working the keeper before flashing an effort wide of the target following good work by Pat Kingwell.

The opener came in the 11th minute when Stuart Zanone combined with Joe Bingham, who then cut to the byline before whipping in a low cross which Richardson-Brown was able to poke home from close-range.

Aaron Lee-Wharton produced a good save to deny Scott Day whilst for the hosts Zanone – who is yet to find the net on his return – saw his touch elude him on two occasions in quick succession.

The impressive Max Watters was thwarted twice in a matter of moments, but United were made to rue not finding the net when they conceded a soft penalty a minute before the half-time interval. But such is the luck when you are at the wrong end of the table that these things go against you, but Clayton didn’t care as he calmly found the bottom left-hand corner despite Lee-Wharton guessing correctly.

In first-half stoppage time the home keeper was alert to prevent the delightfully named Wazir Azeez-Oliwonran from finding the target.

The Leafe though thought they had taken the lead when Nkori-Venceslas-Bola found the net with a header four minutes after the re-start, but the offside flag had already been raised.

A good move ended with Day firing well wide of the target, but United had to dig deep with Lee-Wharton excelling between the sticks to prevent the lively Azeez-Oliwinran on two separate occasions, before Jon Difford was on hand with a timely block.

But the visitors could not put the game to bed and saw a final chance go begging when a free-header from substitute Jake Connaris cleared the bar by quite some margin.

The result sees Ashford United remain in 23rd spot with just Shoreham below them, with the difficult trip to Greenwich Borough to look forward on Saturday 4th November.
