Ashford United and East Grinstead battled out a 1-1 draw to share the points in the bottom of the table clash at the Homelands.

Despite United being the league’s lowest scoring team, there appear to be shoots of optimism as they look to climb away from the danger zone, after a much improved performance, as Jason Whitmore still tries to separate the wheat from the chaff in a season of much change.

With five new arrivals prior to kick-off, all the talk on the terraces had been about the return of Stuart Zanone to the Homelands, but in the end it was fellow debutant Toomy Cooney who grabbed the headlines with a 16th minute equaliser for the hosts.

Although it was the result neither side wanted, United finished the stronger side and they maybe a bit disappointed not to have taken all three points.

The Wasps made a lively start and went close from a Marcus Elliot header in the second minute but they didn’t have to wait long for the opener, when a pass from the right found an unmarked Charlie Postance who converted from close-range three minutes later.

The Nuts & Bolts then drew level 11 minutes later through Cooney, who delivered a low trajectory free-kick into the box, which somehow evaded everyone to find the back of the net.

Kyle Spence was though proving a real headache for left-back Charlie Dickens, easing past him before working Aaron Lee-Wharton with a decent strike.

In the 39th minute Matt Day & Zanone combined well with a neat one-two, before the former tested Oshane Brown who was equal to the task.

Tyrell Richardson-Brown saw an effort cleared off the line in the 49th minute, then Pat Kingwell produced a great run to nearly tee-up Zanone shortly afterwards.

East Grinstead failed to make the most of a free-kick opportunity which was tamely hit into the wall then Lee-Wharton raced outside his box to thwart the dangerous Elliot.

Both sides pressed for a winner, with Michael Wilson working Lee-Wharton, whilst the former Welsh Under-21 player, Gareth Williams went close for the hosts shortly after coming on as a substitute.

East Grinstead did well to repel a late onslaught from the Nuts & Bolts who saw efforts from Richardson-Brown, Kingwell & Williams go close.

Then deep into added time Michael Phillips couldn’t get enough purchase on a header from a Cooney cross as the final chance went begging.

The results leaves Ashford in 21st place, but with a tough run of four out of the next five fixtures away, starting with a trip to Carshalton Athletic on Saturday 21st October.
