Match Preview: Phoenix Sports

Posted in News on 24th October 2017

A return to our old foes!

Tonight, Tuesday 24th October 7.45pm kick off we travel to familiar territory as we face Phoenix Sports FC away!

We last met on Saturday 11th April 2015, when a large number of Ashford United fans travelled to Barnehurst to witness a 2-1 away victory for the Nuts & Bolts, as United played with ten men for 77 minutes!

Then central defender Danny Lye was sent off after 13 minutes, with the hosts taking the lead early in the second half, before Micky Phillips equalised with a penalty in the 63rd minute. Kieran Byrne came off the bench and scored a 35 yard wonder goal in stoppage time to snatch all 3 points, but Phoenix would go on to win the league that season. Both Pat Kingwell and Stuart Zanone started in that game also.

Phoenix currently sit in 11th place on 18 points from 12 games with +5 goal difference. They recently signed ex Nuts & Bolts forward Luke Miller on loan from Greenwich Borough, and scored on his debut in a 4-0 win over Ramsgate on Saturday.

In terms of form, Phoenix have won 2 of their last 3, but before that hadn’t won since 9th September and have lost 5 of their last 7. Phoenix played 5 games between 26th September and 14th October and conceded 3 goals in each of those games.

The host’s win against Ramsgate at the weekend was their first clean sheet in 11 games, meaning they’ve conceded 27 goals since the start of September, as opposed to our 29 goals conceded in the same period.
