Interview with Kingwell

We are pleased to bring you an interview from Nuts & Bolts Mr consistent "Super" Pat Kingwell...

AUFC: What convinced you to stay with us here at Ashford United for the new season Pat?

“I chose to stay at Ashford United as we’ve just done the double and gained promotion to play at a higher level of football. Also we have fantastic fans and it’s my local club.”

AUFC: What’s your career out of football?

“I’m a bricklayer, so you could say I’m pretty handy with organising walls on and off the pitch!”

AUFC: You’ve played in the Bostik South League before, how do you feel the current squad will cope at that level and are you looking forward to the new season?

“I’m looking forward to the new season and the new challenges it will bring, I think the squad we have will challenge for the playoffs.”

AUFC: We all know you as a rock in the Ashford back line, but you can also play up top, where do you prefer to play and where do you feel you’ve played your best football?

“Yeah I’m the rock at the back haha! Where ever the Gaffa wants me to play I’ll play that position and give it 100%. I have played up front and enjoyed it, too be fair my natural position is at the back, but I enjoy playing anywhere as long as I’m in the squad.”

AUFC: You’ve won the supporters player of the season and other awards at United consistently which shows you’re a big fans favourite, and with your song “Super Pat” ringing out from the stands further proves this, does the singing by the Ashford faithful help spur you on during games?

“I love the fans singing and it really spurs the team on, I’m too focused on the game to acknowledge you all though haha.”

AUFC: You’ve played the “glorious game” at different levels including having the chance of turning professional at Hereford, what’s been your highlights through your career so far?

“Highlights of my career would be playing at Hereford in the first round proper of the FA Cup for Hythe. Hereford were a League 2 club back then and I was rated 9/10 and got star man in the Sun newspaper! There was a lot of speculation after the game that Hereford wanted to sign me but nothing came of it. Also getting to the quarter finals in the FA Vase in the 15/16 season after a great run and doing the double with Ashford United last season were all great highlights.”

AUFC: And the big question Pat… Hythe or Ashford?

“I’ve created great memories with both clubs, won the Kent league with both clubs and played in some big games with both clubs. But I’m Ashford born and raised so… Ashford!  I’m looking for to the season ahead, come on the Nuts & Bolts!”

Thank you Pat for taking the time to give us this interview, we’d like to wish you all the best for the new season and we look forward to seeing you frustrating the forwards of the Bostik South league!
