Matt Day signs new contract

We're pleased to announce that young striker Matt Day has signed a new contract with the club.

Matt was released by Millwall last season and made his Ashford United debut, scoring away to Whitstable in our 2-0 win in the league.

Matt told us:

“I’m very happy to be signing because I feel this club is the best place to further my development in football and get some first team football under my belt. It was a pretty easy decision when everyone was so welcoming from the back end of last season and I am excited for what the season ahead may bring.”

We also spoke to the gaffer Danny Lye following last night’s 3-0 win over Erith & Belvedere.

“Everyone at Ashford are pleased to sign Matt Day on a 1 year contract.

It was disappointing that Matty got released from Millwall in the Summer but it is now our job to try and improve Matt and get him back into pro football.

I believe Matty has some class attributes which I think everyone has seen in glimpses at the end of last season and this preseason.

Me and Welfs think some basic non league habits will help Matt grow into the player he shows signs of being.

He knows that he needs to work hard and take the instruction of his teammates to nail down a starting spot in the team as we have some proven strikers in the squad that have done it year in year out this level.

Welcome Matty!!! He used to play for Millwall but he’s alright now.”
