The gaffer sings high praises of the team and support
Following our 3-1 win over local rivals Hythe Town on the opening day of the Bostik League South East Division season, manager Gary Alexander spoke to us about his debut match as Ashford United gaffer:
“I really enjoyed being back in the dugout as a manager and I am very grateful to Jason and the club for giving me this opportunity. It’s obviously nice to get an early win under your belt, especially against one of your closest rivals and a team who feel they should be challenging, I’m sure they’ll be winning games soon.
It had been a long pre-season of ups and downs with performances, and never really having a settled side. It’s never easy leaving players out of the starting XI but that’s part and parcel of having a good squad, so it was nice seeing things come together. But that’s just one game, we now have to focus on the next and keep our standards high, the bar has been set.
Now for our fans. Seeing over 400 at any game in our league is fantastic, we’re lucky the majority was Ashford and to have them on side is great, you really are a 12th man. It’s a long season of ups and downs to come but if you keep showing that sort of support it helps and will help the players to grow and hopefully we can raise our standards to match. The Ashford United support really is great and I look forward to building on that performance and hopefully seeing plenty more Ashford fans through the gates.”
