Ashford United East Kent Youth League under 13s took on Monkton away on Sunday.

With United only having 10 players and centre back Joshua Foster-Naisbitt playing in goal, and Daniel Stringer playing centre back it was always going to be a hard game.

Ashford started well with some good passing which led to new striker Daniel Wootton passing the ball across the goal for a tap in for captain Jack Cooper, 1-0.

Halfway through the first half a handball gave Monkton a free kick to which our keeper unfortunately dropped into the feet of a Monkton youngster to equalise.

Ashford continued to pile on pressure with Luc Rolfe almost putting Ashford back in the lead by almost lobbing the opposition goalkeeper.

With two minutes to go in the first half, United won a corner and newcomer Wootton put a peach of a ball in the box, unlucky for Monkton, the ball came off their own player and into the net.

Half time: Monkton FC 1-2 Ashford United

The second half started and the 10 men of Ashford were under pressure from the start but they defended their hearts out with George Mason battling just infront of the defence and stand in goalkeeper Josh Foster-Naisbitt saving many shots. Not bad for a centre back ay!!

Half way through the second half, Ashford started to fight back with some great passing in the midfield and almost took the lead with some fine shooting from both Jack Cooper and Daniel.

Five minutes from the end, Daniel Stringer went shoulder to shoulder with a Monkton player and the referee gave a free kick. From that, Josh saved well, pushing it to the side only for a Monkton head to equalise.

Full time – Monkton FC 2-2 Ashford United

A great little stat here: Matt Rolfe’s under 13 side are still 2nd in the under 13 East Kent Youth League with 4 games in hand and only 8 points behind top spot and are unbeaten in 18 months. Great stuff!

Players’ Player – Joshua Foster-Naisbitt.

Manager Matt Rolfe had this to say:

“As manager of this team since these boys were 9 years old, I have seen the team grow from strength to strength and after being runners up in division 4 they were more hungry and are on course to win league, and also are in a cup semi-final which is a great achievement for all involved and the club as a whole”.

Many thanks to manager Matt Rolfe for providing us with this match report. We hope to feature more of the youth sides in the coming months.
