Now that the 2017/2018 campaign is over, Jason Whitmore took charge of his final game on Saturday when we hosted Walton Casuals, and hands the reigns over to Gary Alexander who will be taking charge for next season.

We spoke to the new gaffer earlier today:

“It’s my first day in charge of Ashford United and what a fantastic opportunity it is and I am honoured to become manager of such a well supported club with huge potential.

I can’t thank Jason Whitmore and the club enough for the chance, I just hope with my commitment to improve myself as a manager-coach, I can help improve the fortunes of Ashford United on the pitch, the last few months have been a great learning curve for myself.

In recent weeks, I’ve had a chance to get out and watch players for us to get, that will hopefully lead Ashford United to become the force they should be in the Bostik South. Over the coming weeks, like every football club, there will be comings and goings ready to go on June the 28th.”

Gary then gave us this chance to announce that ex Leyton Orient and Reading defender, who was his assistant manager at Greenwich Borough, will be assisting him once more.

“John Mackie will be joining myself [as assistant manager] and will add a wealth of football knowledge to the group we have. John is somebody I’ve worked with before, someone I trust and all that I have achieved in my short spell as a manager, I couldn’t have done it without him, so I am delighted he will be back to take this club forward.

Jason will still be around and I’ll always be speaking and working with him to make sure we are heading in the right direction.

I look forward to the 2018/19 season and hope to see hundreds of you returning to watch Ashford United next season.

Enjoy the break and see you louder and prouder next season!
