Spartans win at second attempt as Nuts & Bolts lose 4-1
Ashford United 3rds 1-4 Ashford Spartans
Played at The Ridge, Kennington, Ashford.
United 3rds played a genuine cup match today, by that I mean that the game was full blooded and no quarter spared. It was also a game that United should have put to sleep in the first half. We created several good chances but we failed to be ruthless in front of goal. The teams came off at half time with the score line at one apiece. United 3rds had taken the lead early on in the game and continued to press forward looking for a second, but Ashford Spartans were resilient in defence and continued to defend solidly. Eventually Spartans pulled level just before the half time whistle. The second half was hard for the United and although Spartans took the lead and began to control the game. United gave everything they could to stay in the match. Unfortunately Jon Philo received a head injury when the score was 3-1 so Gregg Moncrieff stepped in. Thomas Robinson was given man of the match for United and it was well deserved. Rhys Hodges scored United’s goal. Now we have to make our return to the league and hopefully pick up where we left off and although I do not like losing I prefer it to happen in the cup rather than the league. Cheers Roger Hadlum, Manager Ashford United 3rds.
