Woolwich Arsenal 12-0 Ashford United

We took on Woolwich Arsenal in the 1st Qualifying round of the FA Cup on this date in 1893 and got thrashed by the now Premier League club.

They had just changed over from Royal Arsenal to Woolwich Arsenal at the start of that season as they had joined the Football League andwere admitted to the old Second Division which in those days only had fifteen teams including Newcastle United, Liverpool and Ardwick (Manchester City) as well as Lincoln City, Walsall Town Swifts and Northwich Victoria.

The game with Ashford United was in the First Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup, in those days there were four qualifying rounds followed by rounds one to four proper and the then the semi-finals and Final, and took place at their then home of the Manor Ground in Plumstead.

The Arsenal team and scorers from the day which were:

Williams, Powell, Storrs, Devine, Buist, Davis, Crawford, Henderson, Heath, Elliott and Booth,

The scorers were Elliott and Henderson with three each Booth and Heath with two each and Powell and Crawford.

The Ashford XI for the day was:

Young, Niven, Beaney, Harrison, Mills, Davies, Campbell, Wenbourne, Keene, Holley, Holdstock.

 The crowd in attendance that day was 2,500-3,000.

Woolwich Arsenal would eventually reach the First Round proper that season before losing 1-2 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
